A small group of us formed to move this idea forward. We joined 'Cinema For All', receiving training in how to set up and run a community cinema. This time, we ask Alison our new volunteer co-ordinator to tell us a bit about herself: 1. Tell us about yourself I'm an East Lothian girl originally and I think one of the reasons I like Portobello so much is it often feels like a big village, or a small town. I live in 'Greater Portobello' , about a mile inland, but my second home is the boatyard on the prom and my 'happy place' is when I'm sailing in the Forth, looking back at the Porty skyline and Arthur's Seat against a beautiful sky. I'm kept on my toes by my lively 3-year-old so work sometimes feels like a rest! I've had a varied career working as a project manager, trainer, adult education tutor and administrator and I've worked in both the public and voluntary sectors in Scotland, London and abroad. My Volunteer Coordinator role with Action Porty combines lots of elements of those previous roles but conveniently closer to home! 2. What attracted you to work with Bellfield? The strong sense of community that's built up around Bellfield, and the chance to be a part of growing that community further. The role itself; it's a varied role with a lot of scope for initiative and creativity. The opportunities for growth and development - Action Porty is still a very young organisation and Bellfield has so much potential. 3. What are you most looking forward to about working with Bellfield? Finding new ways to harness the people power of volunteering to support Bellfield's community, while making sure volunteers are supported by the Bellfield community. Perhaps the most important part for me is that the job requires connecting with people, out and about (rather than always sitting behind a computer, working from home) and the opportunity to do that while drinking tea and eating cake at Bellfield's Friday cafe is a bonus! 4. If you had a superpower, what would it be? Hmm, that's tricky. I'd like to be able to change the weather but actually more useful would be the ability to speed up and slow down time. That would make it easier to fit in all the important things in my life and slow down the precious moments with my wee boy. Unfortunately our recent planning application was refused due to Bellfield being a listed building. After many months of work, and a considerable number of volunteer hours, as well as engagement with the city archaeologist and cemeteries team, we are very disappointed with this decision. We therefore intend to re-submit the application, and are seeking community support to ensure that it is considered by the Council’s planning committee, rather than a planning officer. Tell us about yourself I'm originally from Perthshire and have lived in Portobello for the last ten years with my wife and two children. I'm a data analyst by trade, and by passion, and I currently lead a team in a well-known UK bank which specialises in fixing inaccurate or poor-quality data across the whole organisation. When I'm not obsessing over data, I'm obsessing over my football team and attending Scotland matches at home, and occasionally abroad. Time with family is most often spent walking our dog, Selkie, or exploring lochs, forests, islands and music festivals in our campervan. 2. What attracted you to work with Bellfield? I was inspired to volunteer with Action Porty by the hard work of others and the realisation that I have the ability to add some value to the community myself. 3. What are you most looking forward to about working with Bellfield? I'm most looking forward to applying my skills and experience to something completely different to banking and understanding how an organisation like Action Porty works differently, where its goals are set differently, and how it feels to help it be successful. 4. If you had a superpower, what would it be? I think my superpower would have to be flight. Approximately 40 visiting musicians took to the stage and filled the Celebration Hall with a glorious selection of jazz tunes. There was dancing in the aisles and even a sousaphone in the pulpit! This was a welcome return by SLJO who first played with us in Aug 2018, just after opening. They played again in 2019 but gigs were impossible the last two years. It was a joy to hear how good the sound was in the Celebration Hall side and how well sound was contained. We have a long way to go before the Celebration Hall is really fit for public events – with adequate toilet provision, smooth flowing through that building and suitable gathering space, all things the big capital project seeks to address - but it was wonderful to enjoy live music again. With pay what you feel home baking and a free taster session in arts, crafts and DIY it is a chance to connect with friendly faces and learn new skills in a relaxed space. Some of the highlights from the first café included homemade cinnamon buns, fresh coffee roasted at Bellfield, scones and jam, Motown and a beginners crochet class. The café is open to all and is completely volunteer run, Ella our Volunteer Coordinator commented “We are so grateful of the community support we have received over the past few years it’s great that this funding allows us to give something back. This will enable us to work towards holding a community shares issue to raise funds to transform Bellfield, in particular to turn the Celebration hall (the Church building) into a flexible, well heated, well soundproofed, space for more community activity. Action Porty is also restructuring to better support wider initiatives in Porty. A good example was the Action Westbank campaign that helped the community save the pitches and Tumbles. Now Portobello is faced with trying to ensure that Seafield is developed into a thriving sister community rather than a monotonous density of unaffordable housing. This time, we ask Morag S. Donaldson Trustee and Board Member Member to tell us a bit about herself: 1. Tell us a bit about yourself. Lived nearly all my life in Portobello. Went to Towerbank and Portobello Secondary the old building which is now flats. Left at 15 to work in the Bank as a junior clerkess. Had three employers, Bank, Insurance Company and finally Local authority. Spent many happy years dealing with Housing Benefits and Council Tax Rebates in Edinburgh, Dunfermline and Fife. Keen Scottish Country Dancer and Floral art supporter although have won both a second and third prize at Duddingston Show. Graduate of the University of Life and now happily retired doing the third age activities. Regular church goer and works on various committees for the United Reformed Church throughout the UK. 2. What's it like working at Bellfield? Variety is the spice of life. Everything from the routine and mundane enquiries to dealing with issues round Historic Building status. Learning all about being responsible for a Graveyard and enjoying the many events held on the premises including some lovely Weddings and Funeral Celebrations. Have even cleaned the place from time to time. Seeing the building open and lively with a sense of purpose for the good of the Community which was why the journey was started in the first place. 3. What's your favourite part of Bellfield? I like the Celebration Foyer for its cosy and welcoming space for small groups. The surrounding grounds and green space is also good to have. 4. If you had a superpower, what would it be? A super power would be to ensure enough finance to run it fully occupied for the benefit of all in Portobello and surrounding area. The ability to forecast trends would also be helpful to ensure we always spent the money wisely. She also volunteers with Porty Community Fridge and is one of the fridge’s Co-ordinators. All this plus her family keep her busy! Jennifer has a great knowledge of many local groups and is a Portobello resident.
