Are the boxes free?
Yes. Absolutely.
However, if you would like to make a donation to the ongoing work of the Porty Community Fridge you can use this link: https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QM6Q54TE. It will be gratefully received as we depend on donations, but there is absolutely no pressure to contribute in this way.
Can I have a box for both Christmas Eve and Hogmanay?
We will ask you to prioritise one or the other because the number of boxes we can deliver depends on the number of volunteers and shops who will be working with us. However, it is possible you may receive a box both nights.
Can I pick what goes into my box?
No. We’re sorry, but we have no idea what we will receive from the supermarkets, and have to operate a quick turnaround on food - so the system has to be as simple as possible. We ask that you try to give any food that you don't want for yourself to a neighbour or friend.
You can ask for a box that is vegan, vegetarian, halal, nut free or dairy free. However, we ask you to double-check all the packets you receive in case we make any mistakes, as things can be a bit hectic on the day if we are swamped with lots of food to sort out.
Where will you deliver to?
We are only able to deliver to within 2 miles of Portobello. See map below.
I'll be out; can you leave my box outside on the step?
No. We’re sorry, but we need to hand your box over to you to comply with food safety regulations.
can i come and collect my box?
Yes. You can collect your box from Bellfield’s Large Hall on our delivery days. We will text you when your box is ready to collect.
I want to volunteer, but I'm worried about being out at night by myself.
Don't worry, you will never be alone. We always work in pairs and, if you prefer, we have roles in the hall that don’t involve doing deliveries. Just pop your preference on the sign-up form.
I have access needs that would affect my ability to volunteer, can you support these?
Let us know what they are and we can discuss your individual circumstances.
Email portyfridgeboxes@gmail.com
Do you have this info in another language?
We're working on it… What language do you need? Let us know at: portycommunityfridge@gmail.com.
Do I need to return my cardboard box?
No. Please reuse it if you can and/or recycle it.
If I volunteer, can I claim for fuel if I use my car or bike mileage?
Yes, you can. Mileage is 45p per mile in a car and 25p per mile on a bike.
